An incoming western disturbance has settled as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan on Monday, with a secondary circulation lying in the neighbourhood over central Pakistan. The combo threw open an elongated trough of lower atmospheric pressure running all the way from north-west Rajasthan to east Bangladesh.
A second trough cut down diagonally across from north Chhattisgarh to Gulf of Mannar, while another cyclonic circulation hung over north-east Assam, clearly depicting how a suitably endowed western disturbance can alter atmospheric dynamics.
Violent weather spread
India Meteorological Department (IMD) hinted about violent weather unfolding over East India, East-Central India and South Peninsula in next few days. Fairly widespread to widespread to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are forecast for North-East India for a week as norwester season (Kal Baisakhi) gets a fresh boost — thanks to western disturbance.
Isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds were forecast over East India on Monday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Assam and Meghalaya for five days; over Arunachal Pradesh for five days from Tuesday; and heavy rainfall over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura both on Monday and Wednesday.
Volatile trough to south
North-south oriented trough from north Chhattisgarh to Gulf of Mannar will bring scattered to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds to Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Kerala and Mahe; and with lightning over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and Telangana for a week. Heavy rainfall was forecast over Kerala on Monday.
Isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds were expected over hills of North-West India on Monday will continue into Tuesday, the IMD said. Early indications suggest high-pressure area (ridge) building towards month-end blocking atmospheric highway over Afghanistan-Pakistan frequented by western disturbances.
North-East on fire
This could confine nor’westers to being a furious, narrow stream along the slopes of eastern Himalayas, East India and North-East India. Rainfall, thunderstorms, high winds and lightning may farm out over an area covering East and North-East India and may also light up eastern seaboard extending from West Bengal, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu and South Peninsula.
