A delegation from Elon Musk’s satellite internet services company Starlink met Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday to discuss its existing partnerships and future India plans.
“Met a delegation from Starlink, comprising Vice-President Chad Gibbs & Senior Director Ryan Goodnight. Discussions covered Starlink’s cutting-edge technology platform, their existing partnerships and future investment plans in India,” Goyal said in a post on X on Wednesday.
Last month, India’s largest telecom service providers, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, signed agreements with Musk’s SpaceX to offer Starlink’s broadband internet services to its customers in India.
Starlink aims to provide high-speed internet to remote and underserved areas, enhancing connectivity for individuals, businesses, and communities. But pricing and speed details have not been finalised yet.
The company has been waiting since 2022 for licences to operate commercially in India but faced several regulatory hurdles including adherence to strict security protocols.
After partnering with Sunil Bharti’s Airtel and Mukesh Ambani-led Jio, expectations are that the company may now get its long-awaited licence.
Goyal’s meeting with senior officials from Starlink is an indication that the government may be willing to expedite the process.
Both Airtel and Jio had initially opposed Starlink’s entry into the Indian market as they feared that the proposed administrative allocation of spectrum (instead of spectrum auction), would give Starlink an unfair advantage and disrupt the market.
