Monday’s low-pressure area over south-west and adjoining south-east Bay of Bengal became ‘well-marked’ over south-west and adjoining west-central Bay, away from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coasts, on Tuesday. This is even as an incoming western disturbance locked itself into position over southern parts of Iran, and is headed towards North-West India.

The disturbance in association with the well-marked ‘low’ will combine to set up variously wet weather over the southern, eastern and east-central parts of the country over the next few days while heat have to severe heat wave conditions may continue to persist over West and North-West India. The disturbance may help bring down mercury briefly.

Carves up trough

Incoming disturbance has already carved up a weather-making trough farther ahead of it, lying extended from West Rajasthan to west Vidarbha. This is gradually expected to dig down deeper into south Arabian Sea and adjoining South Peninsula, extending its expansive influence over land. The trough sets up convergence of warm, moist winds with cooler air from disturbance.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of isolated hailstorm over Bihar on Wednesday while heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya on Wednesday and Thursday, and over Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday.

Rain, thunderstorms

Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (40-50 km/hr) are likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh, and scattered over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand for three days from Wednesday. Isolated rainfall is forecast over plains of North-West India on Thursday and isolated hailstorm over Jammu & Kashmir on Wednesday.

The IMD said well-marked ‘low’ will head towards west-central Bay until Wednesday with same intensity. Thereafter, it is likely to recurve north-northeastwards (away from coast) as already hinted n these columns, and weaken gradually over central Bay.

Pre-monsoon systems

Elsewhere, a pre-monsoon trough runs from south-east Uttar Pradesh with a limb extending to North Bangladesh. A cyclonic circulation lies over Madhya Maharashtra and a trough originating from it lined itself up towards south Interior Karnataka.

These formations will bring isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over met subdivisions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Kerala, Mahe, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam,Telangana and Karnataka, on Tuesday and Wednesday; and over East and North-East India until weekend.
