A fresh and strong western disturbance may impact North-West India from Friday, with a long and bulging limb in the form of a trough reaching down to Maharashtra and beyond West Coast. Clouds, rain, and thunderstorms that it brings may likely put a lid on simmering heat in North-West India though adjoining West India may have to wait a little longer for relief.

Wind-breaker system

The disturbance will pack strength after it rides out a ‘wind-breaker’ (ridge of high-pressure) over Iran-Afghanistan-Pakistan. It will in turn steer ferocious north-westerlies (nor’westers) along a narrow corridor down Himalayan foothills into East India and North-East India while filling the ‘limb’ directed towards West Coast. Fairly widespread to widespread to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, thunderstorms, hailstorms and gusty winds are likely over North-East India for next five days.

Ferocious nor’westers

India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the disturbance will bring scattered to fairly widespread moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand for a week and isolated hailstorms and thunder squalls over Uttarakhand.

Isolated to scattered rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan for five days from Wednesday. Dust storms may unleash over east Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday; Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on Friday and Saturday; and west and east Rajasthan for three days.

To impact South Peninsula

Strength of disturbance is such that it will impact weather not just in East and North-East India but also in South Peninsula. Moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are likely over Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana,Rayalaseema, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal for a week with thunder squalls over north interior Karnataka.

businessline had hinted on April 21 possibility of pre-monsoon weather peaking over East, North-East and South India this week and into next (https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/economy/agri-business/western-disturbance-lights-up-weather-over-east-india-digs-trough-deep-into-south-india/article69474150.ece).

Pre-set circulations

This is now set to unfold as incoming disturbance runs into existing cyclonic circulations and troughs. On Wednesday, circulations hung over north Bangladesh and north coastal Andhra Pradesh. Yet another lay over south-west Rajasthan, with a branch reaching as far down south to Kerala. Another trough looked down from Birgunj in Bihar towards Bhubaneshwar in Odisha.

Active over East India

Fairly widespread moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are likely over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim, east Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh for three days even before disturbance kicks in. Thunder squalls often gusting to cyclone strength have been warned for Odisha on Wednesday; east Madhya Pradesh for next three days; and Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh on Saturday and Sunday. Hail storms are likely in Chhattisgarh, Odisha and east Madhya Pradesh. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha for four days, and over Bihar on Friday.
