CBI should engage with academia & industries to capture AI infused changes: Vaishnaw

Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday advocated that the CBI should engage academia and industries to capture Artificial Intelligence (AI) infused challenges brought about in economic, social and technological fronts.

Delivering the 21st D P Kohli memorial lecture on the 62nd Foundation Day of the CBI, the Minister posed a futuristic probe query to illustrate his point on the changes likely to introduced by the AI.

“An AI agent can commit a crime. The ethical question that will arise then is who has committed the crime and whom to arrest? Can you arrest an AI agent? Is it the AI creating company that is liable or is it the AI agent that is liable? “These are the changes happening in the society today. For such changes, which are taking place on the economic, social and technological fronts, I request the CBI and its great team to look at more collaborations,” said Vaishnaw.

More collaborations

Pitching for more collaborations with the start-ups, industries and academia, the Minister said, “For example, in our AI mission, we are collaborating with the academia to create many new tools.”

Vaishnaw also stated that the country’s growth story stands on “four pillars”. “First, public investment in physical, social, and digital infrastructure. Second, large number of inclusive growth programmes. Third, focus on manufacturing and innovation, and fourth, simplified legal and compliant structures,” he pointed out.

CBI Director Praveen Sood said that 2024 was a historic year for law enforcement agencies and his investigative agency on many counts.

The procedural changes and timelines in new laws are aimed at accelerating justice delivery, he said, adding, “It will help deliver justice to victims in a time-bound manner.”
